There are a few things to be aware of when considering a wood vs a gas burning fire pit. Wood burning fire pits are usually a more cost effective option compared to propane or natural gas; however, due to the variability of a wood burning fire, the temperature of the fire cannot be controlled and can burn at extremely high temperatures. Due to this variability manufacturers often don’t provide warranties, if they do it is most likely limited because of this unpredictability, which may compromise the structure of the fire pit. However, there are many beautiful wood burning options and if you select a quality built structure made of quality materials and of course take care to not burn the flame too hot, you may have a stunning focal point for years to come.
If you do decide to go with a wood burning fire pit, steel is truly one of the best materials because it is a highly mold-able yet solid metal that comes in a variety of shapes to complete your modern-industrial look. Steel also develops a lovely patina over time which is why it is best for non-porous surfaces or areas that you a not concerned with rust staining the surface in which it rests upon. Cor-Ten steel, also referred to as weathering steel, is a sturdy type of steel that is superior to mild steel in terms of durability. It can withstand outdoor elements such as rain, wind, ice, and heat better than other types of steel or other materials on the market due to its high strength alloys which possess excellent weathering properties. On the flip side, this type of steel is more expensive than other steels out there but it will also retain its look and function much longer.
Although wood burning fire pits deliver a rustic beauty and have that attractive woodsy aroma, others may prefer the ease of an instant fire at the flip of a switch or light of a match. Advantages to a propane or natural gas fueled fire pit are that it is easier to light than wood-burning models, produce less smoke and soot, and you don't need to deal with the ash and debris that remain after the fire is extinguished. Furthermore, a gas fire burning over glass or lava rock is particularly alluring.
